Winter Storm Quinn

By: Patti Stewkesbury

Today we've received many calls from homeowners in the Northeast looking for service on a generator. Most of the issues were the result of the customer not being trained on how to maintain a generator properly.  At installation, Kinsley and our network of KOHLER dealers always make sure our customers have the knowledge they need to care for their units.

Now that two major storms have hit the area, here are some things to consider if you’re suddenly dependent on your generator and may not know how to maintain it properly.

  • Check your oil level about every 8 to 12 hours of use; do not let it run low or run out! Also, do not overfill when adding oil. Reference your manual if you are not sure how to do this (many generator manuals can be found online by searching the product number.)

  • Check your fuel if you’re running on propane. Make sure you have enough before calling for service if the unit has stopped working. (Just today, two service calls to Kinsley could have been avoided if the owner had simply checked the fuel.)

  • Very Important! Remove snow from around the generator to prevent blocking vents and airways! Snow can mound up quickly and obstruct air passage which will cause the unit to overheat and fail; resulting in large financial expense if allowed to occur.

  • Finally, for portables and standbys, never add oil or fuel while the unit is running. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.

If you need local generator assistance, Kinsley is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Another storm is on the horizon, contact our Service or Sales departments at 800-255-3503 if you need assistance. Be safe and stay warm.
