The Cost of Power Outages: Can a Standby Generator Help You?

By: Patti Dinneen

Major winter storms do more than give you a reason to use your snow blower; heavy snow and extreme cold can last for several days and your family should have a plan to remain safe during dangerous times.
When storms dominate the forecast, there are a few steps every family should take, though these steps may not come to mind immediately. Stocking up on non-perishables and minimizing outdoor travel seem like no-brainer items on your storm preparation to-do list, but beyond finding a matched set of mittens, many families forget some of the other simple steps required to keep safe and warm.
Winter storms can knock out the power, and when this happens the house will quickly grow cold. Aside from having plenty of blankets around, you might want to build a fire in the fireplace to generate more heat, or use a backup generator to keep the power on. Standby generators offer homeowners a reliable solution to extended power putages. Unlike portable generators, standby generators are permanently installed in your yard, and have the ability to provide uninterrupted backup power for days, since they're directly conneted to your home's electrical panel.
Check out this infographic by Kohler Generators to learn more about the cost of power outages in the U.S., as well as some basic information on portable and standby generators.
