8 Essential CT Industrial Generator Service Tips

Diesel engine generators typically offer more durability, reliability and performance, which is why they are the most frequently used standby power generators for hospitals, buildings, and factories.

Diesel engines are quite durable by nature, which is why we consider their maintenance to be preventative. Preventative generator maintenance essentially deals with fuel cleaning, to ensure that that your fuel is clean and ready to assist the generator in running at any given time. Frequency Of Maintenance

It is generally a good idea to establish and adhere to a schedule of maintenance and service based on the specific power application and the severity of the environment. For example, if the generator set will be used frequently or subjected to extreme operating conditions, the recommended service intervals should be applied accordingly.

Load Bank Testing

If your generator set is on continuous standby, it needs to be able to go from a cold start to being fully operation in a matter of seconds. As you can imagine, this can often burden engine parts. Thus, by regularly using your generator, you can keep the engine parts lubricated, prevent oxidation of electrical contacts, use up fuel before it deteriorates, and generally contribute to reliable engine starting.

Proper testing of a facility's backup power generation system is one of the only ways to identify generator system weaknesses in the case of unplanned power disruptions. Due to insufficient testing, a number of facility managers still remain unaware of the weaknesses of their backup solutions. Without regular testing, diesel engines that are regularly run on very low loads – or no load at all – become increasingly unreliable and costly to maintain. The effects include smoky exhausts, carbon build-up, fuel system problems and lubricating oil deterioration, all of which decrease reliability and add to running costs.

Starting Batteries

Weak or undercharged starting batteries are the most common cause of standby power system failures. Even when kept fully charged and maintained, lead-acid starting batteries are subject to deterioration overtime and must be periodically replaced when they no longer hold a proper charge. Only a regular schedule of inspection and testing under load can prevent generator-starting problems.

Fuel Sampling

The fuel should be frequently checked to determine whether or not it is stable enough to handle a full load. Based on the results, other methods can be used to remediate any issues.

Fuel Filtering

This method removes water and other contaminants from your generator’s fuel system. Our filtering process will filter contaminants off the bottom of your fuel tank and will remove water as well. This service is used to help prevent condensation and reduce water in the system. By topping off the fuel, you can reduce sidewall services where condensation forms. If you add this step into your preventative maintenance program, you can reduce the amount of time you have to spend with a fuel vendor.

Fuel Polishing

Fuel polishing incorporates three major steps, which are designed in a way to fully ensure that your fuel is free from any bacteria and fungi. Fuel polishing helps to prevent a large percentage of diesel engine and backup generator failure because it removes microbial development, which is a major cause. Professional Maintenance Is Frequently Required

There are many maintenance tasks that are essential to the operation of your generator, which require the specialized skills and knowledge of a professional.
